Johnson's & Johnson's (Design Thinking Project for IFF)

Objective

Come up with ideas to improve the sales of Johnson's & Johnson's products

Summary

My group mates  was tasked to come up with ideas to improve the shopability of Johnson's & Johnson's products.

Based on the survey insights majority of the consumers prefer physical shopping over online shopping, mainly because they can test out the products. However, when it comes to personal care products, results may only show after trying the products over a period of time. Keeping these points in mind, my group mates and I came up with a few ideas.

Need Statement

"I need to purchase exclusive products in a quick and easy manner."

Ideation

Vending machine

This vending machine sells sample sized products that are either not available in local stores or have yet to be launched.

Our prototype for the vending machine.
In one of our surveys, we listed some ideas for the vending machines, so as to find out what appeals to the consumers most. We included vending machines that allow the refilling of products, exclusive products that are not available in local stores as well as sample sizes of products that have yet to be launched. From the results of the survey, we learnt that consumers in Singapore would prefer to have a vending machine to sell products that they are not able to find in local shops or has yet to be launched.

The products that can be bought from our vending machines are made to be sample sized as we found out earlier that most of the consumers prefer physical shopping over online shopping, mainly because they can test out the products and when it comes to personal care products, results may only show after trying the products over a period of time. Our vending machine allows them to buy the sample sized products to try out, so that they can decide on whether they are interested to purchase the full sized version of the product when it is launched in stores.

Since good deals are always appealing to many, consumers can show their sample sized product of a product that is newly launched in stores, to get a discount for the full sized product. This vending machine also has a touch screen function and application that guides  the consumer in purchasing something that suits them most.

Mobile application

Our second idea is a mobile application that can help to locate our vending machines so consumers know where to find them. It also carries information on the J&J products we carry, allowing the users to know more about the products. When a user shares the app with a friend with their referral code, both of them get to enjoy discounts when they purchase the company’s products.

Reflection

Through this project, my team and I managed to come up with ideas to help increase the shapability of J&J products and we are humbled to have received the "Most Actionable Award" for our work.
